Heavy Penalties for Offending Religious Sanctities in UAE Cyber Law

cyber law is not just a legal obligation

Under Article 35 of the UAE Cybercrimes Law, severe penalties are imposed for certain offenses committed through computer networks, information technology, or websites. These offenses include:

  1. Insult to Islamic Sanctities or Rituals: Any insult directed at Islamic sanctities or rituals is punishable by imprisonment and a fine ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 1,000,000, or either of these penalties.
  2. Insult to Sanctities or Rituals of Other Religions: Insulting the sanctities or rituals of other recognized religions, where these are protected under Islamic Sharia, also attracts similar penalties.
  3. Insult to Recognized Celestial Religions: Any insult to recognized celestial religions is subject to the same range of penalties.
  4. Condoning, Provoking, or Promoting Sin: Engaging in or promoting any form of sin through digital means is punishable under this article.

If the crime involves any insult to the Divinity (Allah, God), the messengers and prophets, or directly targets the religion of Islam by injuring its foundations and principles, the penalties become even more severe. Such offenses are punishable by imprisonment for up to seven years, reflecting the UAE’s strict stance on protecting religious sanctities and maintaining social harmony.
